Summary:

The Enterprise receives an unexplained distress call from an Earth-vessel that they discover is coming from an old-style ship recorder that was designed to be ejected in an emergency. When Scotty tries to download it into the computer, the recorder begins transmitting a signal and Kirk order the crew to red alert. On the bridge, Kirk makes a ship-wide announcement that the transmitter originally came from the SS Valiant 200 years prior and orders the department heads to report to the bridge. Upon reporting to the bridge as ordered, CMO Piper introduces the Enterprise's new psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. Spock analyzes the message from the Valiant and relates that the crew had been pulled out of the galaxy by a magnetic storm and then accessed computer records on "ESP" in humans. He also relates that many crewmen died aboard the Valiant until the captain evidently gave the order to self-destruct his own ship. Determined to get to the bottom of this, Kirk orders warp factor 1 and sends the ship toward the edge of the galaxy. They encounter a strange field and, upon entering it, encounter main strange phenomenon including flashes of light and electric pulses. It doesn't take long for Kirk to order a full reverse. Another electric charge hits and Dr. Dehner along with Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell. When they make it out of the field and tend to the injured, Gary Mitchell's eyes are glowing silver. It's discovered that both Dehner and Mitchell have exceptionally high ESP scores, Mitchell having the highest. As time goes on and they observe Mitchell further, he starts to exhibit strange powers and seems to grow more powerful by the day. Dr. Dehner is assigned to work with him and quickly grows attached. As Mitchell grows more powerful, he becomes an issue. Spock suggests they head to the planet Delta Vega where they can both restore their damaged systems and strand Mitchell there. After some convincing, Kirk reluctantly agrees. They sedate Mitchell and bring him down to the planet with them, but he escapes, kills a crewman and knocks out Kirk and Spock. It's revealed that Dehner now also has silver eyes and she leaves with Mitchell. Dr. Piper revives Kirk and he goes after Dehner and Mitchell. He attempts to sneak up on them, but is discovered. He appeals to Dehner who eventually begins to see his side and zaps the power out of Mitchell. They both zap each other, slowly weakening, until Dehner can't anymore. A struggle then ensues between Kirk and Mitchell, ending in Kirk blasting a rock face with a phaser rifle and burying Mitchell in rubble. Dehner dies shortly after. Back on the Enterprise Kirk wants it entered in the record that Mitchell and Dehner died in the performance of their duties.
